Good reasons to become a Learning Establishment
By commission of the Minister for Education, Culture and Science (OCW), Savantis is playing a central role within the framework of the Adult and Vocational Education Act. This Act requires that there be good coordination between secondary vocational education and industry. Savantis is involved in vocational education in the Netherlands within the European framework of mobility. Savantis is increasingly maintaining its contacts with pre-vocational secondary education, vocational education itself, and, in a limited way, with higher vocational education, with the goal of upward mobility being kept in mind. To this end we are working closely with other centres of learning.
We are dedicated to excellence in vocational education, both in the Netherlands and in Europe as a whole. We hope to be able to contribute to an interesting and exciting future for young people and to healthy sectors of industry by providing well-trained people for their needs.
This is why we are building a bridge between education and industry, at both the regional and national levels. We are doing this by making and strengthening contacts between:
student, college and Learning Establishments;
regional Learning Establishments and industry;
regional colleges and industry;
vocational education and the government authorities; and,
pre-vocational secondary education, secondary education, and higher vocational education.
We carry out tasks provided for by law in the areas of:
practical learning;
maintaining a system of qualifications; and,
assessment and conducting examinations.
This also involves keeping the register of internationally certified learning establishments. The register contains, amongst other things, company profiles, qualifications for which the establishments have been recognised, and the proper education of learning programmes.
Five good reasons to become a Learning Establishment
You will provide for the future by ensuring a sufficient supply of skilled workers for your line of business.
Your staff will become connected with new trade techniques and will remain current with the times. Trainees will encourage you to take a fresh look at your business.
You will distinguish yourself in the labour market. Both colleagues and consumers will consider your certification as a Learning Establishment to be proof of quality.
You will demonstrate your commitment to quality by training students. Customers will appreciate this as well.
You will expand your network through contacts with other Learning Establishments in your region. Registration in the register of internationally certified learning establishments will ensure that your business can easily be found.
What is a “recognised establishment”?
Recognised establishments may train both student-trainees and apprentice-employees. Trainees or interns must include several practice periods during their training. This method of providing for education is referred to as the college-based track. Apprentice-employees may also choose to have on-the-job training. Typically, they work four days a week at a certified learning establishment and attend college one day a week. This is referred to as the training-based track. Mainly student-trainees are placed at Learning Establishments abroad.
How do you become a certified learning establishment?
When you decide to apply for certification as a Learning Establishment, you can submit your application to Savantis by means of a digital application form.
Complete all information requested, including such items as your company profile, staff policy, industrial release policy, and trade techniques. Completing this form will take about half an hour. Send the completed form by e-mail to Savantis. Once we review your information, you will receive information regarding certification. Applying for certification and registration in pre-vocational secondary education is free of charge.
Should you first wish to receive more information, please contact Savantis by e-mail:

There are many reasons to become a Learning Establishment. We have listed only five in the right hand column. All agreements will be made in writing so that all parties involved – you, the college and the student/trainee – will have a clear understanding of what is expected of each.
If you would like to become a certified learning establishment, please consider the following points:
As a Learning Establishment you will invest management, staff officer and practical instructor time in coaching the student/trainee. Among the activities involved are recruitment and enrolment, coaching, training, assessment and evaluation interviews. You make planning agreements with the student/trainee and the college. At least once a year you will review the information about your company as posted on the Savantis interactive website.
We may ask you to collaborate with us with respect to quality assurance. This will include completing forms and providing details about your activities with interns.
Each Learning Establishment will maintain contact with colleges (ROCs, Regional Education Centres or Vakcolleges/Vocational schools), students and Savantis.
You will make agreements with the student and the college about the learning process, such as planning, coaching, progress, working hours, length of the placement period and remuneration (placement, insurance, travel expenses, etc.). Should you wish to have more information on cost, planning, time investment and the like, please ask the college about this.
